“Once you open up, you will start to create awareness.” - Priya

Fighting for equitable education for Dyslexic kids is already hard. But imagine advocating in a country with minimal knowledge about learning disabilities such as dyslexia.

Dr. Lauren and guest speaker Dr. Shanmugapriya discussed the difficulty of finding equitable education for her dyslexic son in India. She also shared her child's diagnosis and the lack of awareness about dyslexia in India.

As an advocate and a mom, Priya is a strong-willed woman who tries to spread awareness not just to child’s educators but also in her country.

Highlights & Resources

  • How Priya found out his son is dyslexic
  • Learning about dyslexia
  • Symptoms of dyslexia in kids

About Our Guest

Dr. Shanmugapriya Periyannan has a Ph.D. in the sciences, is a mother of two special children, one with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia,  ADHD, and another with cleft lip. Priya is a material scientist, an upcoming children's book author, a microblogger, and a compelling dyslexia advocate.

She is now back in India with her family and recently started working as a postdoctoral researcher in India. NanoScience excites her the most when it comes to working and her kids are behind her excitement and motivation in her personal life. Dr. Shanmugapriya is who she is today because her children have taught her strength, resilience, and conscious and gentle parenting.

She finds advocating and creating awareness about neurodiversity and cleft lip as her purpose on social media.
