Diagnosing students can be difficult especially if the symptoms are complex. Many parents and teachers only see a student’s action but fail to see the root cause.

In this episode, Dr. Jesse Fischer, a licensed clinical neuropsychologist, discussed the difficulty of diagnosing children in private and public schools. He also talked about how finding the root cause of students’ mental health challenges and why resolving it first is much more effective than just resolving what’s on the surface.

Many parents only see the tip of the iceberg when it comes to their child’s mental health. It is important to find the root cause and resolve it first then the other issues will follow.

About Dr. Fischer:

Dr. Jesse Fischer is a licensed clinical neuropsychologist who specializes in the assessment of children, adolescents, and young adults who think and learn differently. His clinical expertise includes assessment, diagnosis, and academic and treatment planning for individuals with neurodevelopmental concerns (e.g., Dyslexia, AD/HD), traumatic brain injury/concussion, epilepsy, emotional difficulties, and other complex medical conditions. Dr. Fischer sees clients in several clinics across LA., where he was born and raised. 

Bio/Background: 

  • Earned his BA at Occidental College in LA and his MA and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Houston. 
  • Predoctoral internship in Pediatric Neuropsychology at UCLA
  • Postdoctoral fellowship in the (Lifespan) Neuropsychology of Brain Injury and Sports Concussion track with the UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT Program in the David Geffen School of Medicine.
  • Clinical settings have included inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, as well as integrated pediatric care and specialty outpatient clinics at nationally recognized medical centers (Texas Children’s Hospital, TIRR Memorial Hermann, UCLA Semel Institute/David Geffen School of Medicine). 

Dr. Fischer's recent research has focused on the role of the family environment and early childhood stress (e.g., trauma, brain injury) on brain development, neural correlates of neuropsychological problems following TBI, as well as interventions to enhance recovery from sports concussions and more severe TBI.
